A woman plays many roles throughout her life. She is a daughter, sister, and mother, and the amazing fact is that she always gives her best in every role. In India, we refer to earth as Mother Earth. We do so because earth also protects us, gives us shelter, and many other resources, just like a woman, who can do anything to protect and raise her children and family. In many parts of our country, women are worshipped as Goddesses as a part of few festivals. But the same woman who is worshipped as a Goddess is also beaten, battered, and killed. Even though in other countries also, some women are maltreated, but in India, the situation is worse.
Now, letβs talk about some gender-biased issues that discriminate against women, and make India a truly patriarchal society. First and foremost, no matter what women achieve in their life, but they are still considered inferior to men. Gender roles prescribed by our society make it difficult for women to do things their way. Almost every woman in India has to depend upon the male members in her life, which goes from father, brother, husband, and son. There are many practices in India that represent male dominance. Marriage in India is always considered an important phase of a womanβs life. In many families of our country, the choice of choosing a husband for herself is still not given to many girls. Another reason is the limited career choices for women. Their career choices are controlled over by their family members, and they cannot pursue any course they want without their familyβs permission. Even when women are allowed to work, they are not given equal wages as men in many jobs. Moreover, workplace harassment makes the situation more difficult for them. One more issue that women face is their dressing style. In our Indian society women are always told about how they should dress. If they wear short and western dresses, they are shunned for it because they are then considered to be appealing to men and also as an invitation to rape them.
There are many cases in India, which reflect on the worsening situations for women. The Nirbhaya Rape Case is not hidden from anyone. There are many such cases and they are just increasing with time. People often protest against it, but later everyone forgets until they hear of some new case. Itβs not like women are just not safe outside because even in their own families, women fall prey to rape, molestation, beating, and battering, etc. Now, it has become really important that everyone should understand the seriousness of the issue, and for some action to be taken.
