Hello everyone! In this blog is about brihadeeswara temple….

Tanjore Big Temple:

The Tanjore big temple was built in the 11th century CE. Its architecture resembles the architecture of Mughal Empire. The temple depicts the greatness of Hinduism over the rest of religions. It is located in Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu. It is one of the largest temples dedicated to Shiva. This temple consists of three prakaras (entrances). The central gateway known as Nayudamman gate which shows the image of Nandi bull – Lord's vehicle.

This is the biggest temple among thanjavur temples. Almost 40,000 people visit this temple everyday.

We have seen many temples in our country but this temple has something different about it. Inside the temple we saw many statues of Nandi bull. It is believed that these statues represent Shiva’s bull. These statues have no head, body, legs and some have tail. Only their eyes are visible. Because of their size they look like stones. These statues are not made out of stone but carved from wood. Each statue weighs almost 2.5 tons.

There are four gateways on each side. All these gates have sculptures of Nandi bull. The temple is built in Dravidian style. It means they used local materials like granite and sandstone.

Legend says that in olden days Lord Siva and his wife Parvati stayed in this area. One day Goddess Parvati asked lord Siva to take bath in river Kaveri. But he refused. Then goddess Parvati started her worship and told Lord Siva to take bath. However, the god did not listen and continued to refuse. Finally goddess Parvati cursed him and asked him to take bath in water from river Kaveri. After taking bath lord Siva got his divine powers back.Lord Siva then asked his consort to bless him with child. So, Lord Siva took the form of Linga and entered the womb of Goddess Parvati. From the union of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvati one baby named Chandramouleshwar emerged. Since then, this baby became famous as Chandramouli. When the time came Lord Siva gave birth to Chandramouli, he left the body and went to mountains. Later, the king of Thanjavur temple came to know about this incident. He decided to build a temple over those hills.

According to legend, after leaving the body Chandramouli fell asleep under a tree. His mother Parvati came there and woke him up. She asked him to go and fight demons. But he didn't want to do anything. However, one demon appeared before him and attacked him. Chandramouli jumped on the demon's neck and killed him. While killing the demon, he got a boon from..
