Sarees are the traditional attire in India and in many countries around the world. Sari weaves have been practiced since ancient times. The word sari comes from Sanskrit, and means "to tie". In Tamil language, the word sari translates as "garment". Since then, Indian women have been fond of wearing the saree at special occasions. Nowadays, you'll find different styles of sarees in the market. Let's take a look at some of them!
Achkan Saree - These are the sarees which cover the entire body except the face. Achkan are generally seen in wedding ceremonies and festive occasions. These sarees are simple and plain in design.
Arti Saree - Artis are the sarees which are decorated with intricate designs. Aartis are worn at festivals and parties. Women use these sarees on auspicious occasions.
Chanderi Saree - Chanderis are the sarees made using pure cotton thread. The chanderi saree is named after the town of Chandni Chowk, an old city located in Delhi where the sarees are traditionally woven.
Drape Saree - Drapes are sarees having a beautiful border along both sides. The pattern may vary according to region and culture.
Fulani Saree - Fulanis are the sarees worn by Muslim women. Fulanis are known for their simplicity and beauty.The sarees are extremely comfortable and graceful.
Hamdard Saree - Hamdards are the sarees made from silk threads. Hamdards were originally worn by royalty and nobles.
Jhumki Saree - Jhumkis are the sarees designed in geometric patterns. Jhumkis are popular among young people who prefer modern trends.
Kanchipuram Saree - Kanchis are the sarees that are hand-woven in Kanchipuram, Chennai (formerly known as Madras). Kanchis are famous for their fine embroidery.
Lal Badnam Saree - Lal badnams are the sarees with bright colours. Lal bads are often purchased as gifts and given on occasion.
Maithili Saree - Maithilis are the sarees adorned with floral motifs. They are especially popular among ladies residing in the state of Bihar.
Meenakshi Saree - Meenakshes are the sarees crafted with floral designs. They are usually associated with temple festivities.
Pallu Saree - Pallus are the sarees worn in South India. They are generally bought at jewellery shops and are ideal for parties.
Patola Saree - Patolas are the sarees worn during a religious ceremony.
Banaras brocade was introduced in the 15th century by Sultan Sikandar Lodhi. The banarasis were originally woven in Benares (Varanasi) and are now produced in many parts of the country including Punjab, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal etc. These beautiful sarees feature bright colors and intricate designs.
Gota sarees are among the most popular sarees worn by women across India. They are quite heavy and can take several hours to make. Gota sarees were first introduced in Jaipur by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh Ji. The material is generally obtained from natural fibers and pure gold thread.
