Exhuma is a horror film written and directed by Jang Jae-hyun, and starring Choi Min-sik, Kim Go-eun, Yoo Hae-jin and Lee Do-hyun released on Feb 2024.
The Plot
Go-eun and Do-hyun was investigating the illness of newborn baby. When they visited the Park's house (newborn baby's family) Go-eun identified the reason for illness it was due the curse of Grave's Call by Park's Grandfather. They decided to move the grave to another place with Kim Sang-deok and Yeong-geun colleagues of Go-eun. When they visited the grave Sang-deok had bad feeling about the place with was near to North Korea and the grave was nameless with some latitude and longtitude markings. Park suggested to cremate the coffin without opening which added suspicious to Sang-deok. Finally Go-eun suggested to perform ritual while digging the grave to avoid the curse.
Go-eun and Do-hyun performed the ritual while others dugged the grave. After lifting the coffin, while cleaning one of the grave diggers servers the head of human headed snake which triggered the rain. So they decided to cremate the coffin after rain stopped and transported the coffin to nearby mortuary. One of the member opened the coffin which released the evil spirit of grandfather which targeted his bloodline, killing his son, son's wife, grandson. They cremated the coffin before evil spirit kills the newborn, removing the curse. After few days the grave digger who killed the snake was suffering from bad dreams, he asked Sang-deok to find the head of snake. So Sang-deok again visited the grave and started digging then he found the head of snake and also another long coffin standing up. He informed Go-eun and Do-hyun and decided to stay at temple and cremate the coffin at morning. But in the middle of night demon was released from coffin, Do-hyun was attacked and possessed then it turned into fire ball and retuned to mountain. Go-eun figures out that the demon was guarding relic using possessed Do-Hyun. They decided to remove the relic by Go-eun distracting the demon while the others dig the grave. While digging Sang-deok found there is no relic under the grave. A vision reveals Monk Kitsune (who provides location for Park's grandfather grave) embedding a katana inside a decapitated demon's body, turning the samurai into a demon and Park's grandfather's grave serving as a cover for the relic. Sang-deok realizes that relic is a sword embedded in the creature's body. Using the knowledge that “Fire opposes water, metal opposes wood” so “wet wood opposes flaming metal” where flaming metal is demon so Sang-deok slayed the demon dead using wet wood and faints. After some months all returned to their normal lives.
The Review
Exhuma was one of the worth to watch korean movie which gives you new experience. The actors played their role perfectly. I choose Exhuma because of Kim Go Eun and Lee Do Hyun but the whole movie was good and I loved Lee do hyun's tattoo look. The Suspense and mystery was maintained till the end of the movie and the ritual scene, grandfather targeting this bloodline scene and samurai dormant turning into fire ball scene built tension.
