Deval Shanghvi, who worked for Morgan Stanley, one of the world's largest banks in the US, and his wife had come to India to spend some holidays, but the social problems present here caught their attention so much that these conditions changed. Determined to bring them, they returned to India.
The couple, who moved to Mumbai in 1999, started Dasara to help broaden the impact of organizations working to address social problems. Today ' Dasara works closely with people contributing to social welfare i.e. Philanthropists and Social Entrepreneurs to bring knowledge, funds, and manpower on one platform and prove to be more effective in bringing about change.
What was the original problem: -
According to Sanghvi, social entrepreneurs working in the social sector of India have better solutions at low cost to deal with social problems, but the qualified manpower required to take their organizations to the next level And they do not have access to adequate funding.
Recognizing this problem, both of them carried out extensive studies in their early days in order to better help social institutions and widen their influence.
Good start:-
'Dasra' started his work with an organization that helped the waste pickers in the slums of Mumbai to earn a better livelihood. Dasara provided recycling units to this organization, which brought stability to their work.
Now the paper pickers did not have to approach any middleman as before. The work remained the same, but the livelihoods of these people improved significantly with access to resources and the removal of middlemen. Deval and his wife started planning to expand the work after initial success.
The effect is visible: -
'Educate Girls', an organization working for the improvement of girl child education in Rajasthan, has been a part of the Dasara Social Impact Program. Prior to joining this program, this organization was associated with 500 schools whereas today it has the capacity to work with 14,000 schools.
In addition, Dasara's 'Indian Philanthropy Forum' brings together Philanthropists. 'Dasra' has studied many social problems on funding various companies and has come out with research reports related to them.
Expanding: -
From 1999 to 2003, 'Dasra' worked with eight non-profit organizations. Then he had to spend a lot of time with each institution. After this, he prepared a model in which more and more institutions could be included. As a result of this, from the year 2004 to 2007, Dasara worked with a total of hundred non-profit organizations.
What was this program: -
The Dasara Social Impact program guides to deal with the challenges faced in the spread of social institutions. In this ongoing program, intensive training is given in Mumbai or Bangalore for three weeks. The cost of this program comes to four lakh rupees per entrepreneur. Out of this, Rs 1 lakh is paid by entrepreneurs Mahindra, FICCI, and USAID themselves for seven months while the rest is raised from corporates.
