When you hear the word calligraphy, what comes to your mind? Yes, exactly. Different forms of writing but calligraphy is more than that. Some kind of art exists that can never be supplanted by technology. Calligraphy is one of them. The word Calligraphy means beautiful writing. It comes from the Greek words Kallos which means beauty and graphein which means to write. Calligraphy is the art of putting the brush on paper properly by hand i.e.skill of handwriting. It is a visual art related to writing. You are designing and executing letters with a pen, brush, or any other writing instrument.
Calligraphy originated in ancient China during the Shang dynasty period it was popular and during the Han dynasty period (206 BCE - 220 CE)it was practiced by well-educated people. But it is believed that different forms of calligraphy were created in India, Japan, Tibet, and Europe. In the dark ages, Celtic scribes and the middle ages Gothic scribes used small feather quill pens to write small letters. When the Greeks and Romans came, it is found that they carved capital letters in the manuscript. At the same time, Central Asia invented paper technology.
As more and more people read and wrote, writing became necessary to communicate with each other. People started writing in a modern way and they considered it as an education. During the industrial revolution, Calligraphy was concealed and went out of sight. In the 1970s, the art was revived again in North America with cartridge pens, markers, and other craft things. By the beginning of the 18th century, Calligraphy was fueled up among students with some copied books and printed text published by writing masters. Before the 20th century, students were judged only by the content of their work but after the invention of the ballpoint pen, their writing techniques played very importantly in judging their skills.
After that, the beauty and elegance of writing slowly increased among the writers and induced them to make the quality of their style. People added the expression of strokes to the letters concerning the old script styles and made their styles. That is known as Calligraphy and after that, there is no end to this beautiful art form.
