Film maker Haroon Rasheed sets 7/G in a contemporary urban setting in an effort to revitalize the horror subgenre. The movie gives a novel twist to the haunted home concept by fusing witchcraft, rejected love, and vengeful ghosts. However, it falls flat, becoming bogged down in cliches and blatant story turns.
The film begins with Rajiv (Roshan Basheer), an IT worker, and Varsha (Smruthi Venkat) celebrating the move into their new apartment with their child. The joyful mood is slightly marred by Subramaniya Siva's menacing gaze from a neighbor. This creates the conditions for the chaos that follows, as some plot against Rajiv's family because of their jealousy of his success in both his personal and professional life. Apart from that, there are evil powers within the 7/G apartment itself. The story revolves around Rajiv's family's ability to survive these many dangers.
Performance:
Two women's performances seem to be the main reason the movie works. The first is Smruthi Venkat, who portrays Varsha, the poor wife in a predicament and uncertain about the nature of the problem in her home and how to fix it. The other is Sonia Aggarwal, who gives a great performance as Manjula, a spirit that won't leave the premises without exacting revenge, demonstrating that she hasn't lost any of her acting chops. All of the supporting cast members of the movie, including actors Siddharth Vipin and Subramania Siva, provide excellent performances.
The picture excels at placing terror in an urban setting, which heightens the unsettling sensations and makes them more real. The captivating opening of the screenplay draws in viewers and creates a sense of suspense for an intense horror story. However, a more succinct and efficient screenplay would have made the movie even more engaging. If the family had dealt with the evil powers without the help of a kind spirit, the story could have struck a deeper chord. This modification might have raised the tension and emotional stakes by introducing a layer of unvarnished human struggle against the paranormal.
The first part of 7/G is full of surprises and is undoubtedly one of those horror movies with its moments. The female protagonists in the movie take over the ghost-hunting profession, which is a nice change from the male ones. But a mediocre second half and poor execution swiftly destroy all the good things.
Not only are we let down by this lackluster performance, but we are also irritated by the movie's tendency to waste the potential it initially showed. If there had been no good spirit and the family had battled the evil spirit alone, 7/G might have worked better. There was room for simplicity and brevity in the screenplay.
