His camp coach, Dinesh Lad, suggested that he switch to Swami Vivekanand International School because it had better cricket facilities than his previous school and Lad was the head coach there. Prior to Lad recognising Sharma's batting prowess and moving him up from number eight to open the innings, Sharma was an off-spinner with some batting talent.
