Hi guys! I am here with a new blog. Hope you guys will read it and like it.

We are very well aware of pollution or more precisely water pollution. But today I am going to you tell you something about Marine pollution. So here I start.

Marine pollution is basically the discharge of undesirable substances in big water bodies like oceans or sea causing various physical, chemical and biological changes in water. These changes might be harmful to marine organisms and can affect the quality of water in these water bodies. All these contaminants or pollutants are carried away by rivers which are dropped into the sea. The major sources of marine pollution includes sewage, industrial effluents, synthetic detergents, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemicals, heavy metals, oils and petroleum products, radio active wastes, plastics, etc. The most serious and deadliest pollutant is oil. A single drop of oil can spread over a large area of water which isolates water from coming in contact with atmosphere oxygen. This results in shortage of oxygen in water bodies. It inhibits the growth of plankton which forms the basis of the food chain in aquatic ecosystem. There are several other sources of marine pollution which are discussed later.

Following are various pollution which are the major source and cause of water pollution :

  1. Mercury pollution - Mercury is among the various harmful water pollutants. Both organic and inorganic forms of Mercury are highly poisonous and it is responsible for minamata epidemic disease in Japan and Sweden. Minamata disease was occurred due to consumption of heavily contaminated fish.
  2. Lead pollution :  Lead is very harmful for living organism if it is consumed. Main sources of lead to water bodies are effluents of lead or lead processing industries.
  3. Cadmium pollution : cadmium is also harmful for our health. Cadmium contaminated drinking water and its high levels found in rice causes a disease named itai-itai or ouch-ouch disease.
  4. Fluoride pollution : fluorine is found as fluoride in our nature. In various regions of Haryana and Punjab, consumption of fluoride containing water from wells is responsible for endemic fluorosis. Similarly, dental fluorosis and knock-knee syndrome is observed in areas of Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan due to high fluorine content water.

Control of marine pollution : it is a necessity of today to protect our marine water bodies. The various ways are :

  • Stabilization of ecosystem.
  • Recycling area utilisation of wastes.
  • Removal of pollutants by suitable techniques and methods.
  • Control through various laws and acts.
