How do you find your Passion? We are often asked that, and as we grow up, we have that pressure to “DO SOMETHING”. We often choose our Major in High School as our choices and interests, or sometimes, as we are told to. In the early 2000s of India, people were still warming up to the concept of “Guidance Counselor", or “Career Counselor”. After some time, Every Major English Speaking School had a Guidance Counsellor.
Usually, in India after S.S.C, we have to select any of the Three Streams i.e; Science, Commerce, or Arts. The Arts field does not get much exposure in India, and it is basically counted as the last resort. Thankfully, now, people have started paying more attention to it and are seeing Arts as a career option. Though I always knew I wanted to take Arts, and even my parents supported me, society told me not to, and now not to their avail, I happily Graduated as an English literature student.
Some Orthodox Parents don't see a “Career Counselor” as a “Real Guide” and often ignore them thinking they are doing the best they can do for their child. Now the real question comes, How can a Child know his talent and pursue that dream further?
I'm a big believer in People having different aptitudes and them having their career in a different area of expertise rather than chosen by their parents. Recently, there are lots of aptitude tests offline as well as online that can be filled and you can get Instant results. Although I am a fan of aptitude tests, I reckon to do it every five-six years. Ok, hear me out why.
There are lots of Neuro-divergent people (Autism, ADHD), when a child comes in fifth grade, they sometimes have limited knowledge of practicality and are more Empaths, it's sometimes hard for their brain to function and they struggle because of it. When the same child goes to tenth grade, he now has more potential and more opportunities, he learned all the things he needed to go to school, and now can teach others the same thing. When after another 10 years, he goes to University to study for his graduation, he has now learned everything he needed to for his life and can study whatever he wants to, he can be a Doctor or a Nurse, or even a psychologist.
Now, if you take his aptitude test five years apart, once when he was 14 graduating tenth grade, and another when he was 20 when deciding to go to University, both will have a Major difference as everyone's brain develops and changes pattern over time.
There are a lot of quotes about being Passionate, while they can be true for some people, I personally do not resonate with some of them. “Passion is something that drives you crazy” I agree with half of it because while there are people who are hyperfocused and Intelligent beyond the limit, there are people who unknowingly dissociate from a task and they feel frustrated when they forget little things, “Passion is about sitting down, doing your work whole-heartedly, and still not rushing it” that's my definition of being Passionate, that's my definition of a life lived fully and meaningfully.
There are stories of people finding out their passion as soon as they leave school, and also stories of people finding their passion when they are 35.
My advice? No person has only one Passion for their life, My Passion and Goals have kept changing since school, till I graduated, and now I'm confident that my goals or Passion will keep changing.
My Passion or Goal that changed was never drastic, they were intertwined with each other and had one Focus all along. It's what your Highest purpose can be. While you search for the meaning of your life, it's right there in front of you, but you chose to ignore it or maybe bury deep down due to circumstances or Parental/Guardian figure.
For eg: If you are a good crocheter, painter, sketch artist, and have a love for Computers, you can combine all your goals and design an app that teaches potential Budding Artists to Paint, Crochet, or sketch. So when someone says find your Passion, always remember; “Combine your skills, Set multiple goals, Learn, Rest, Find a Purpose that matches all your Goals, and most important of all, Enjoy!”
