Men and women are the two spinning wheels of our society. Each of them is very important. When treated equally they contribute together to the progress of the society. But the independent women that we are talking about today, was not independent around 19th century. Even if we see present scenario we will observe that women are not completely independent.
Firstly we will understand what was the condition of women around 19th century :
(1.) Rights for married women :-
At the beginning of the century, women had very few rights of their own. Upon marriage, women became the property of their husband. Divorce was possible for men to divorce their wives. It wasn't until 1857 that women could divorce an abusive husband.
(2.) Working women :-
There was a view that women should not work . Some of the women worked before they got married. However, once married whatever they earned became the property of their husband.
(3.) Right to vote :-
The United Nations General Assembly adopted the convention on the Political Rights of women which went into force in 1954.
In the Victorian era, women were seen by the middle class atleast, as belonging to the domestic sphere, they were only asked to provide their husbands with a clean home, to put food on the table and to raise their children. Women were disadvantaged both financially and sexually. Their rights and privileges were limited. Our society restricted women from forming groups, protesting, raising voice for their rights. They were not allowed to even wear clothes of their own choice.
Independent women in 21st century:-
The best thing about time is it changes. The condition of women has changed in recent times. They are enjoying their rights and contributing more in nation building.
(1.) Women of 21st century are becoming independent. They are working and earning on the basis of their talent and skills. Women are holding senior posts in the companies as well as in government institutions.
(2.) They are no more dependent on their parents or husband's earning. They are making their own ways and heading towards success.
(3.) Women are becoming politically stronger and superior. They are contributing in decision making and they are doing it effectively.
Today a woman is considered as an independent women when she earns on her own, manages her work and family effectively, contributes in decision making that affects the life of many people .
They are keeping their opinions and views in front of public and sharing their ideas. I wish women become more and more independent so that they contribute equally in nation building
