October 10 is observed as World Mental Health Day. This year's theme is Mental Health in an Unbalanced World. In fact, 10 people in India suffer from mental illness at any given time. 0.8 of them are severely mentally ill (about 1 crore people). That is 1 crore families. If one person suffers from mental illness, his whole family suffers. In Kerala the figure is 13.4.

The world loses about 8 lakh people every year due to suicide. India loses 1,40,000 and Kerala 8,500. Kerala ranks 5th in India. 24 people commit suicide every day in Kerala. Suicide is the number one cause of death in India among the 15-39 age group. 16 crore people in India consume alcohol. Out of this 2.90 crore people are addicted to alcohol. 3.1 crore people use cannabis and 2.5 lakh are addicted. India is not far behind in the use of other intoxicating substances.

The reasons are non-availability of mental health services, lack of knowledge about the disease, misunderstanding about Chikijha, discrimination against patients, fear of humiliation etc. Socially, economically, and educationally disadvantaged and sexual minorities have less access to mental health services.
