Democracy In Our Classrooms And Children...

So, today I was teaching to my class about democracy in politics; everything was smooth until I realised that they don't have open conversations in classrooms. What I understood is that they never discussed topics in classroom, majorly they had the role of an audience and it is not just the case with these children this is how the whole system works.

I felt for them and  realised that is why we lack adults who are unable to question things. that is the reason we end up voting for wrong politicians and that is why we tolerate different abuse. At the heart of all this is no scope in curriculum for conversations, knowledge is forbidden and information is praised. we want students to learn data and not the reasons behind any idea, I understand that sometimes its important to keep dates in your mind but only rot learning will not take us anywhere. if we want to grow as a nation we must take acknowledgement of what the students want.

People who don't understand the subject and don't even know what democratic values means are teaching our future generations which results in lack of interest in the subject among students. The major problem I identify is that somehow all these children are brain washed that rot learning is the method  and social studies is all about remembering data. They wondered when I advised them not to focus on dates very much.

Another realisation that happened was that teaching is just not a profession it is dealing with life and no institute can prepare you for every child unless you know yourself how to deal with this. The outlook children provide to you is very raw and innocent. They are still in a phase where we can mould them for a greater future. The power to make responsible decisions and listening to their hearts can be easily taught in a classroom rather than at any other setup.

Creating a classroom where every opinion is heard, where differences are addressed, every idea is given importance and students learn empathy will create citizens who are democratic in every sense. We must take this leap of faith with our children and must learn to understand them as individuals. I can only hope and initiate this at my personal level, I can just hope that many people will be able to echo with my thoughts.

Children imbibe ideals mostly from family and school. Unless these space start practising the values they preach, we can't change the status quo. Well written ✨
