It's no secret that Bengalis go crazy during the durga puja. The craziness literally starts from the day of Mahalaya. I am a BENGALI, a proud one, and I will give you the special insights as to why are Bengalis so crazy about Durga Puja.
We Bengalis often come out as dominating , powerful and not to forget sweet, and I think that the main reason behind that is Durga Maa. She is powerful, she is fearless, she is everything that a girl is supposed to be. Probably that's why Bengali girls are mostly one of those girls who are daring and fearless. We have a constant source of power from our Durga maa.
During this time of the year, it's impossible to find a bengali who is sad, we are literally at our happiest part of the year. Trust me when I say this, we count days for the entire year for just this amazing event of the year.
If you know even just one bengali person, you would know that we are the ultimate foodies and a beyond lazy person. Too be honest, we will be in our blanket the entire year, filled with laziness in our souls, but when it comes down to Durga Puja, we are the most enthusiastic people in the world, I MEAN IT!
As I told you that we are the ultimate foodies, and while the entire India is celebrating Navratri at this point of the year and avoid non vegetarian food, WE start our Soshti with a beautiful plate of FISH CURRY. You heard that right!
Regarding this, our Gods are very adjusting. Hahaha!!
They never burdened us with fasting or vegetarian food, they always knew that bengalis cannot just live without fish and mutton curry.
During this time of the year, there is togetherness, and selfless love. You will find youngsters holding hands in almost every pandal and that's how love blossoms. Isn't it wonderful to see both love and faith in God can be there at the same time?
Perhaps one of the best thing during Durga puja is the ‘bhog’, people can survive just on that hog for an entire lifetime, it's thaaaaaaaat tasty!
Then comes dhaak and dhunuchi dance. This is just not just any ritual dance, it is a feeling that every bengali person shares, men and women both dresses up in their best attire and do the ritual dance and it's beyond wonderful. You would know that bengalis are really competitive sometimes and hence we have competitions in these too and we love it as much as we love durga puja. It's a healthy competition though… hahaha
Undoubtedly the most emotional moment for all in Durga Puja is bhasan when every Bong bid adieu to Durga maa and says ‘asche bochor abar hobe’, which means Durga maa will visit us next year too and we will have even more fun next year. Dashami ends with ‘shidur khela’ (playing with sindur) where married women apply sindoor to each other’s faces as also to Goddess Durga dressed in the traditional Bengali attire.
With this, we also learn that endings can be emotional and beautiful too. Every bengali soul saddens to see when the pandals and put down, there wakes up some deep rooted sorrow in us, knowing that the wait is of another year. With that sadness comes hope too. Hope to see Durga Maa yet again. Hope to find happiness in little things yet again.
It's all about LOVE, POWER, HOPE, SADNESS and HAPPINESS. That's what Durga Puja is to a bengali.
Happy Durga Puja!
