In the 1984 Olympics first Indian women athelte to come in limelight was P.T Usha who have her best performance in 500 metres hurdle race in spite of the fact that she could not win any medal.
The first women to win a medal in the Olympics was Karnam Malleswari in weightlifting at the Sydney Olympic,2009. It was 2012 London olympic,in which Indian women boxer participated for the first time. In this game Indian boxer M.C Mary Kom wan a Bronze medal. The same year , Sania Nenwal won an Olympic Bronze medal in badminton. All this achievement are sufficient proof of the contribution of Indian women Sports.
Inspire of several achievement, Indian sportswomen are not given their due of recognition. There is a Social stigma attached to there participation in sports, which is primarily seen asa male domain.
In fact, women all over the world face many challenges in the Field of sport due to social,physical and psychological reason . Discrimination and gender inequality have become part of everyday life for women in every sphere, such a education, politics and job etc. Society looks upon women only as housewife and child-bearer. Such an outlook is even more prominent in India.
Traditionally the role of Indians women in society is confined to being a homemakers. They are expected to perform their domestic duties. On the other hand , society has enabled men to establish their dominance in the field of Sports. Women have always been discouraged from pursuing a career in sport. In addition to lack of assistance from the government, women generally do not even get the support of their family and friends. Due to Physical attribute of women there trainability is always been questioned. They are not provided the same facility as their male counterparts. Issues such as safety of women has always was the situation is specially in India.
Every sports women in India faces such Harsh realities. It is the high time when every citizens and government should realise that this time of social atmosphere and discrimination will only hinder the progress of the nation. Every one of us should show our due respect to the these women achiever for their efforts and determination. I. spite such condition in our country more and more women are breaking records and making Indian proud. at the national as well as international level. Society Institution and sports governing body should acknowledge and give them their support wholeheartedly.
