Today I am going to share with you all about few farm crops. I just have choosen this topic randomly. So let's get started.
Healthy foods are those which provide nutrients to your body for your well-being and retain energy. Water, carbohydrate, fibre, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals are the key nutrients that make up a healthy and balanced diet.
All our plant foods are grown on farms of some kind, from huge wheat and maize fields of North America to the banana plantations and coconut groves of the tropics.
Here are few major crops details…
- WHEAT: It is the most important grain crop in mild northern climate, where it is cultivated on a vast scale. It is a member of the grass family. It has been bred to have large seeds for grinding into flour. Bread, cakes, dosa, etc can be prepared using wheat flour.
- MAIZE: The ‘corn’ grown in the America is actually maize, a giant grass that grows well in sunny climate. It's kernels can be cooked and eaten directly or ground into flour to make tortillas and corn chips.
- SOYA BEANS: High in protein and rich in oil soya beans are once known only in the far East. Present, popular with vegetarians, they are grown in warm climates world wide. Tofu is made from soya. Dried soy beans, soya sause, flour, soya milk are products made from soya pods.
- RICE: One of the world's three staple foods along with maize and wheat. Rice is a type of grass that grows in warm climate. It is cultivated in flooded paddy field, which covers large areas of the tropics. Dosa, flour, rice cakes, boiled rice etc can be made using rice grains.
- COCOA: The main ingredient of chocolate, cocoa comes from pods of the cocoa tree, grown mainly in West Africa and tropical America. Cocoa powder is used to prepare cocoa butter, chocolates, milk shake, bakery items etc..
- COFFEE: One of the most valuable crops produced in the tropics. Made from the seeds of small trees. Each red berry contains two seed, which are dried in the sun before roasted and ground. Hot & cold coffee, cakes, DIY skincare etc are made using coffee powder.
- TEA: The leaves used to make tea comes from evergreen bush that grows in tropical and sub tropical climate. It is mainly cultivated in India and China. The leaves are hand picked and quickly dried. There are ample of tea like green tea, milk tea, black tea, flavored tea such as vanilla, cardamom, ginger, masala etc..
- BANANAS: Grown in bunches of upto 200, sprouting from clusters of huge leaves that shoot up from freshly roots. They are valuable crop throughout the tropics. They are usually cut while green in colour so they are perfectly yellow and ripe when sold. Can be eaten as fruit, used to prepare biscuits and cakes, DIY hair mask etc…
- COCONUT: The big nuts of the coconut palm are an important crop on many Pacific Islands. The fibrous husk is used for matting and rope making. The white meat of the nuts is used for foods either fresh, desiccated (dried), coconut cream or coconut oil. This crop has many uses like for cooking, skin, hair and in some medicines too.
