We all knew that Our sun is a star. It is one of those factors which makes life possible on our earth. You must have know many things abot our Sun but Do you know these facts:

  • Sun consists of 99.86% mass of our whole Solar system. - The mass of sun is almost 330,000 times of earth's mass. Sun's 73.5% mass is of hydrogen and most of its remaining mass is helium which is 24.9% and remaing elements consists 1.6 % of its mass.
  • Millions of earths could fit inside our sun : If sun was a hollow ball than we can fill approx 9,50,000 earths inside it. And if we managed to fill the sun completely without leaving any space inside then you could fit 13,00,000 earth inside the sun. Surface area of sun is almost 12000 times than that of earth.
  • Sun will consume our earth in future :  After 130 millions years, sun will burn it's all hydrogen desposit. And that time size of sun would have increased to  that much extent that it will consume Mercury , venus and Earth inside it. At that stage our sun will became a “ Giant Red Star ” .
  • The source of energy of Sun : The huge amount of energy in our sun is produced when hydrogen nuclei combines to form helium nucleus. This process is known as "Nuclear Fusion”.
  • The sun is almost a Perfect sphere :  There are only 10km difference in its polar  and equitorial diameters. This makes sun the closest thing to the perfect sphere observed in nature.
  • The Sun is travelling at 220 km per second : It takes about 225-250 light years to complete one orbit of the centre of the Milky Way.
  • The Sun will be of same size of the earth one day : when sun will complete its Red giant stage it will shink into size similar to earth but its mass will be same . This stage is known as “ White dwarf ”.
  • Sun has already lived his half life : currently our sun is at “ Yellow dwarf star ” stage. At current sun has already burned its half hydrogen store which took 4.5 billion years to burn. So, we can say it can spend more 5 billion years easily.
  • Distance between earth and sun changes: we know that earth travel in an elliptical orbit around sun. So, distance between them always varies from 147 million km to 152 million kms. The distance b/w sun and earth is called  “Astronomical unit(AU)".
  • Sun rotates in opposite direction to the earth : Our earth rotates from direction east to west on its orbit where as sun rotates from west to east on its axis.
