I have not read a lot of works of Indian Literature. But I always wanted to. Most of my reads are from western literature. Somewhere there was a thought in me that our literature was not like the rest. So, my instinct always pulled me back.
During college, we got introduced to Indian Literatures. Following this, we got assigned to read a lot of poetry and prose from Indian literary texts. When I began to read, I realized that I was keeping a treasure of wonders aside all this long. I began to read more. I was unsure about picking up books. So, I depended on book Instagram accounts for suggestions, and that is how I came across “three thousand stitches” by Sudha Murthy.
I first heard about Sudha Murthy from my roommate. She was working at Infosys, Bengaluru. She was initially surprised to know that I did not know anything about her. Slowly, she shared stories about the inspirational life of this eminent personality. Her intelligence, humbleness, confidence, and love for work are inspiring. When I read three thousand stitches, I could relate my life to many incidents mentioned in the book.
The book is a collection of 11 anecdotes from the life of the author. She had to surpass a lot of struggles in her life. Her determination to break the stigma was truly inspiring. She had to face painful and harsh criticisms for her actions. But her resolution to carry on with the desire of her heart moved her forward.
The anecdote begins from her childhood. She says that there is a story behind every decision. Experiences taught her. With the built-up confidence, she broke the shell of conservative society. She developed her style, broke the social norms, and stood up for education. Her belief in the power of knowledge has motivated thousands to follow her path.
In an interview with Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Sudha Murthy speaks about her style of writing. Being an author, she got questioned about the reason behind using simple language. Sudha Murthy conveys that she desires to make everyone read. To adhere to this principle, she chose to write in the most simplified manner so that everyone could understand her story.
The book has honest anecdotes. Throughout the writing, the author shares the lessons that she has learned in life. She encourages women to empower themselves, keeps insisting people trust themselves, and above all, wishes to make everyone believe that there is hope in every good action.
The book is a must-read. Somewhere it triggers you to be yourself.
