Simply said, this is the most thoroughly delightful TV show I have seen in a long time, regardless of language. All three genres—comedy, romance, and drama—are brilliantly merged. Love the on-going, well timed comedy on the differences between North and South Korea. No one is left out or given an undue advantage. The romance sequences are vivid, and the goodbyes are devastating. Many amazing moments, from his parents' house to the motorcycle rescue. And despite utilising the distinctive split that exists in the peninsula, the carefully created thrilling plot miraculously has no gaps and has no red herrings. Both the stunning splendour of Switzerland and the peaceful Korean countryside are beautiful.
I can't think of another actor who would have been better for the role of the North Korean soldier than Hyun Bin, and he has some absolutely outstanding heroic rescue and romantic scenes. Son Ye Jin is charming and attractive, which helps to make her role sympathetic and endearing rather than unpleasant. She has a wide range. The supporting cast members are likeable, particularly the hearty thief Gu and his seemingly heartless fiancée Seo Dan. The S Korean family members' cruelty and avarice are terribly familiar, yet the adorable group of N Korean troops are all charming.
Hollywood hasn't been able to produce any fictional works that meet this level. The best television shows, like Narcos, are based on real people and events. Racial injustice, suicide, and other good but gloomy topics have dominated Hollywood programmes.
You'll smile, cry, and just be enthralled. How could they possibly top this, I wonder.
