Serena Williams born on 26th September 1981 is an American professional tennis player and former world no. 1 women tennis player. She has won 23 grand slam tittle making her the no.1 player in winning the grand slam in open era court. She held the no.1 player rank for consecutive 168 weeks tying with the other greatest player Steffi Graff. Across all the format of this game, she has 39 grand slams. She is regarded as the gretes women tennis player of all time and also the greatest women sportsperson of all time. In 1995 at the age of 14 she made her first ever professional debut in tennis game. But in the year 1998, that's when she tasted her first title win in the doubles ,partnering with her sister Venus Williams. She won Wibledon and US open mixed doubles in the same year with partner Marx Mirnyi.
In 1999 she defeated Marina Hingis and won her first major single grand slam title in US OPEN. In 2017 she achieved the feat of record 23 grand slam titles by defeating her sister Venus Williams in Australian Open. Being black and women she was the worst victim of race, at very earlier stage, during the school days she had to move to other city for schooling because for white parents William sisters were not fit for their society and kids.
It was the year 2001 and it was the finals of India Wells tournament in California. She was just 19 years old at that time. There was continuous booing from the audience that was directed towards her father Richard Williams and sister Venus Williams and she asked the management for apology which they refused. So the Williams sisters decided to boycott the tournament and never to play their ever.
β I remember the whole stadium was 99% white people and they were all booing. Racial slurs were made, it was loud it was echo. it was so loud that I could feel that in my chestβ she quoted.
It didn't stopped there only, years after years the same discrimination was faced by both of the sisters. They didn't gave up so easily. She also become the vocal for Black Lives Matter and became one of the major face for this tournament. She also pushed for equal pay for the female players similar to male counterparts.
Serena Williams is the role model that all the women and girls could look upon and to fight for the equality and justice.
