The Buxwaha forests are located in the eastern region on Madhya Pradesh. It is a home of more that 2.5 lakh trees, a very rich wildlife and around eight thousand tribal people. It is also a part of Panna Tiger Reserve. But this rich flora and fauna in Buxwaha is in danger now.
Lakhs of trees are going to be cut in Buxwaha to mine diamonds. This project was at first given to an Australian company named Rio Tinto in 2010. However, they did not do mine the area because of protests of residents and environmental activists in 2014-2015.
In 2019, Aditya Birla Group won the bidding and is undertaking a project that costs 55000 crores to min raw diamonds. It will be giving almost 42 percent of it's profit to the government.
The MP government claims that they will be planting new saplings to cover up for the trees to be cut. This is a childish come back as we all know that what is the difference between the forest which has been there for hundreds of year and newly planted saplings.
This mine which is going to be made by cutting lakhs of trees will be using 26,000 crore liters of water in over 300 hectares of land in the drought-prone region of Bundelkhand. This region has scarcity of water for every day use and at the same time people are cutting trees and wasting water to mine diamonds.
Diamonds are something which can now be made in labs and has the same quality as of the mined diamonds. The diamonds are in fact a marketing hoax which is created by the diamond companies to make people attracted towards it. Gold is something in which we can invest in but diamonds have no resale value. Diamonds are for the few percentage of people who can afford a tiny shiny thing that is just a marketing gimmick.
The government claims that they will be generating employment for people living in Buxwaha but nobody has asked those people who would put their lungs on stake and leave their traditional practices to work in a diamond mine.
We should raise our voice and the only TRP seeking media should be concerned about this. The people who disturb the ecosystem in the name of economic progress should learn the meaning and importance of ecological balance and environmental preservation. Boycott the diamonds which costs lives of millions of trees, destruction of flora and fauna and the adverse impact on the lives of tribal people living there.
