Many people have misconceptions that toppers have different mind. They are intelligent, they are God gifted, they have different brain power, they are born intelligent and blah blah...
But let me tell you there is nothing like that. God has given everyone same mind power. No one is born talented. God doesn't do partiality. It is us who decide how to use and where to use your mind. So please don't blame God if you don't improve yourself.
Accept it that your brain has unlimited power and you can compete and defeat anyone and just beleive in yourself, just ignore what people say.

There's a thing which make topper and an average student different. We just start study at random without planning what to study and thus we get bored. You need to write down what to study. Write topics which you will study and as you finish those topic. Mark a tick there. These strategy should be followed every day
Many students see the study as very boring thing. Things are not boring we make them boring. You need to Become curious about what your are going to study. Just say to yourself " The thing which I'm going to learn is something new and it will be fun" and then see you will enjoy.
Break during study session is very important, like if you study for 1 hr, you may take 5-10 minutes break in which you can do what pleases you. Like you can dance, exercise, just walk on the open place or just take a nap.
Every topper has this quality. They revise the things many times that they are able to remember tough things easily. It's our brain, it forgets if you don't revise. Revision is very important. In school when you get a free period, then instead of gossiping you can revise what you have studied.
This one is also very working and important trick. You can teach someone or you can just pretend to teach someone what you have studied. Remember one thing you need to teach in a very simple language. Just image you ae teaching a kid of 10 year old and if you are able to teach it in simple language it means you are not going to forget that thing. Albert Einstein said :

You may have seen that toppers always ask questions without any fear while few students hesitate to ask their doubts to teacher. They have fear what if teacher insults them. No matter if a teacher insults you, you can learn from there and no one will able to insult you in future. So I think it is better to get insulted now that getting insulted in future.
