CASE STUDY: PREVENTING CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES
At the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, interested patients with established cardiovascular disease were asked to sign up and then were placed into a program where they eat a plant-based diet. The patients also follow their physician's medication prescription.
They tracked 198 consecutive patients for an average of 3.7 years and compared the 177 patients who adhered to the plant-based diet to 21 patients who didn't adhere. The adherent patients had significant improvements in symptoms compared to no improvement in nonadherent patients.
Initially, the patients were asked to avoid all added oils and processed foods that contain oils, fish, meat, dairy products, avocado, nuts and excess salty, sugary foods, juices and refined carbohydrates.
Health professionals have debated whether these case studies provide legitimate evidence that whole food plant-based diets should be prescribed to treat heart diseases or not.
But with this case study and many other done so far, there's no question that many people with established cardiovascular disease have experienced reductions in symptoms and have not experienced a heart attack after following a whole food plant-based diet. Now there are enough evidence that for anyone wanting to take steps to avoid cardiovascular disease, a vegan diet of mostly whole foods is a great option.
RECIPE: OATMEAL BANANA COOKIES
Ingredients ~
• 3 large, ripe bananas
• 2 tbsp chopped walnuts
• 2 tbsp peanut butter (optional)
• 2 cups quick oats
• ½ tsp cinnamon
• 2 tbsp raisins
• 2 tbsp chopped dried apples
Preparation ~
• Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
• In a large bowl, mash the bananas and if using peanut butter then add it to the bananas as well.
• Add oats to the mixture and mix well. If the mixture feels too wet, then add more oats and if it feels too dry or stiff, then add more mashed bananas or water.
Remember, there's no way you can mess this up so, add in this mixture what you think is necessary ;)
• Now add the walnuts, cinnamon, and dried fruits to the mixture.
• This mixture is now completely ready to get baked. Form balls by using approximately 2 tbsp of dough per ball.
• Press lightly and fill in the whole baking tray (covered with parchment paper). Bake for 10 minutes, after that flip the cookies and bake for another 10 minutes.
If you like your cookies crunchier, then bake a little more of like 10 minutes or take them out couple of minutes early if you like them softer.
And, Voilà
Healthy and yummy Oatmeal banana cookies are ready to serve you as munchies :)
