Hey Candlemonk family!
Another curiosity today. We all know that we have limited fresh water on this earth and we cannot drink sea water. Even today many people have to travel to far of places to get fresh water. We know fresh water is a non renewable resource. Once we will consume all the fresh water.. we'll not get more of it.
So at this point, we all will surely think, what if all the oceans and seas turn to fresh water?
Let's have a look at it.
So if immediately, all the water turns to fresh water, the marine life will be affected at that very point. There are 22,000 species of fish which require salt water to survive. They have skin tissues filled with salt, which have a protective layer, that allows salt particles to move in and out of these tissues. Salt plays a crucial role in maintenance of these tissues. In the fresh water the salt will flow out of these tissues and the tissues will in turn get damaged. They will cease to perform their functions and fishes will die. This will lead to many problems:
1) The animals who feed on marine animals will die, food chain would collapse.
2) 700 million people earn from seas and marine, they will suffer from hunger, poverty and death.
A single celled algae, prochlorococcus gives 20% of oxygen to the entire world, which survives in salt water. Phytoplankton and other sea algae give 50%-80% of oxygen to us which will be no more.
3) This will lead to decline in O² levels and proliferates CO². The entire food chain will collapse.
4) Green House Effect will intensify.
5) Planet will start to overheat.
6) Global warming will lead to increased hurricanes, tornadoes and Typhoons.
7) In the Southern Hemisphere, people will freeze and in the Northern Hemisphere, they'll die of increased temperature.
8) Water density will abruptly change, leading to unprecedented earthquakes and volcanic explosion.
9) Arctic ice sheets will drop 10 cm, which will provoke the largest tidal wave, covering the entire Earth.
As a result no one will survive on this planet.
Did you know many machines have been invented to convert ocean water to drinkable fresh water? Well, they get deteriorated and of no use then. Scientists are working on developing better conversion machines. Hopefully we'll have them in future.
From today's curiosity, I learned that nature is in this form because of a reason. We are surviving because of this balance in nature. Exploitation and greed for natural resources is disastrous and hence, must halt.
