With 2,767 deaths in the last 24 hours, the death toll is at 1,92,311, the highest single-day record. In the last 24 hours, 2,19,838 recovered, taking the number of recoveries to 1,38,67,997, reports The Statesman.
The country country is struggling with a second wave, raising more fear about its overhelmed health care system. crowds have formed outside hospitals in major cities which are filled to caapcity. A number of people have died while waiting for oxygen.
India has the capacity to manufacture 7.5k metric tonnes of medical oxygen on daily basis, and around 2.8k metric tonnes of oxygen is required for both Covid-19 and non-covid health use.The Narendra Modi Goverment has said that it has already diverted nearly 90% of the total production about 6,600 MT to be exact for medical use. so, if you look at the numbers, india already has enough production that ca meet the demand of medical oxygen in the country.
The problem lies in the trasportation system prevalent. There are roughly 500 oxygen plant functioning in india right now. The liquid oxygen produced at these plants is cryogenic and is trasported to the distributers in special tankers, an indian express reports says.
The DRDO has developed SpO2 (Blood oxygen Saturation) spplemental oxygen delivery system to make up for the massive shortage of oxygen gas cylinders across the country. This is an automatic system developed by the defence bio-engineering and electro medical laboratory (DEBEL) of DRDO in bengaluru.
The oxygen delivary system can be used both for soldiers at high altitude areas and Covid patient at it delivers supplemental on the basis of SpO2 levels.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has began airlifting empty oxygen containers to be refilled and used for trasporting it to boost oxygen supply across hospitals amid the acute oxygen shortage s india faces its worst covid wave.
Such operations will continue to enhance oxygen supply across hospitals. This comes a day after Delhi High Court suggested airlifting oxygen to delhi hospitals that are crying for oxygen every day.
